UN Nuclear Chief To Visit Iran

30 October, 2017, 01:59 | Author: Priscilla Morrison

The visit by the head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog, Yukiya Amano, is the first since U.S. President Donald Trump declared he would refuse to certify Iranian compliance with the 2015 accord Iran agreed to with six world powers. Amano is determined to play his important role in this sensitive period, he said.

Mr Rouhani spoke days after the US House of Representatives voted for new sanctions on Iran's ballistic missile programme, part of an effort to clamp down on Tehran without immediately moving to undermine an global nuclear agreement.

Since January 2016, the IAEA has monitored Iran's nuclear commitments under the nuclear agreement and conducted verification checks, said Amano. "The agency could stipulate that Iran's nuclear commitments under the JCPOA are being implemented", he was also quoted as saying by Press TV on Sunday.

According to reports, the Trump administration hopes that the threat of renewed sanctions will induce Iran to agree to new restrictions on the missile program.

Iranian state news agencies reported that Amano will meet with Vice President Ali Akbar Salehi, who oversees Iran's nuclear activities, among others.

A country that has signed an worldwide and multilateral agreement does not have the right to deal with it in whatever way it likes, Rouhani said, referring to the USA administration's treatment and interpretation of the deal.

Trump has stopped short of withdrawing the United States from an global accord signed with Iran in 2015, which seeks to ensure that Tehran would place limitations on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of some sanctions.

"We will produce any weapons of any kind that we need", the 68-year-old said, in a speech to parliament. In exchange, the US and other countries agreed to curb economic sanctions against Iran. And we will not hesitate to use them in the appropriate time to defend ourselves.
