As of the 4 PM CDT update from the National Hurricane Center, what was tropical depression 18 has become tropical storm Philippe near the western edge of Cuba. The system is helping to pull a tropical air mass in our direction from the south, keeping rain and overcast sky conditions in place through tonight.

The Sun Sentinel reports that heavy rains have already hit South Florida. Rain totals up to 6 inches are possible in localized areas. Regardless of strength, Philippe will produce flash flooding in South Florida.

While our cold front and the developing ocean storm will be the cause of much of our impending rain, there is a third factor as well.

In South Florida, the thunderstorms are expected to start late morning, and then last though early Sunday morning. "The primary threats from the strong storms will be lightning strikes, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall".

Regardless of development, very heavy rainfall is expected to also impact Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, parts of Cuba and even the northern Bahamas through Saturday.

As of the 5 p.m. Saturday evening advisory on Philippe, the storm has an area of sustained winds hitting 40 miles per hour, but mainly focused east and southeast of the center of the system.

A high wind watch is up for nearly all of New England. Temperatures are forecast to remain in the 40s again on Monday night. A weak disturbance could touch off a few showers later in the week, with Thursday the best chance for some at best scattered showers.
