Amazon is behind Microsoft, and ranks as the world's fourth biggest company by market capitalization, however, with $528 billion as of1630 GMT. At that time, Bezos had a net worth of $89.7 billion, while Gates had a net worth of $90.1 billion.

Jeff Bezos is rich. Amazon stock surged in after-hours trading on Thursday after the company reported strong third quarter earnings.

Jeff Bezos is on track to become the world's richest person. The move boosted Bezos's net worth by as much as $6.6 billion.

This is not the first time that Bezos has outpaced Gates - it previously happened on 27 July when Amazon shares hit a historic high, though Gates took back the lead hours later. If the share gains hold through today's close, Bezos will top the index for the first time. Just yesterday, he was the richest of the world's rich men.

Warren Buffett was third in the latest ratings, with $88 billion in assets, followed by Amancio Ortega, Spain's Zara clothing tycoon, with a $77.2-billion fortune, and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg with $75.4 billion. However, Bill Gates remained at the top position thanks to a 7 per cent spike in Microsoft's stock overnight. Gates's wealth also increased, albeit by a more modest $340 million, after Microsoft released its own earnings report.
