  • South Africa farmers jailed for forcing black man Victor Mlotshwa into coffin

The duo forced Victor Mlotshwa 27, into a coffin and threatened to set it on fire after he trespassed on their land in the northeastern Mpumalanga province.

Mr Mlotshwa wept in court when the video was shown and his mother was so distressed she left the courtroom.

Activists from political parties, including the ruling African National Congress and the main opposition Democratic Alliance and the EEF rallied outside court and attended each day of the trial in force.

Mr Mlotshwa denied making any threats to the two farmers.

Oosthuizen and Jackson's treatment of Mlotshwa was inhumane and disgusting, a traumatic experience for anyone to have to undergo.

Judge Segopotje Mphahlele called the crime a "most appalling act" and said it was not the first time the farmers had forced someone into a coffin against their will.

He also said the duo had used cable ties to restrain him.

On charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, kidnapping, attempted murder and intimidation, both men were sentenced to a total of 16 years imprisonment, with Jackson receiving an extra three years on a charge of defeating the ends of justice.

But prosecutor Robert Molokoane said the whole country was watching adding:"They had no respect for the law as they took the law into their own hands".

In the 20-second clip, shot on a mobile phone, a white man - thought to be a farmer - was seen dropping a large stick in order to cram a clearly petrified black man into the wooden casket, ordering him to 'get in, I want to throw some petrol'. "They took the video to show what they do with the black man".

Eloh was said to have been killed by South African police officers two months ago.

The case has caused outrage in South Africa and highlighted racial tensions in some farming communities.
