  • US Secretary of State arriving in Islamabad today

"The things which due to diplomatic norms couldn't be said were discussed during these talks after which the U.S. changed its stance", Asif said, adding that a USA delegation, led by Lisa Curtis, the senior director for South and Central Asia at the National Security Council, stressed upon restoring contacts between the two countries during a recent visit to Islamabad.

"After the new United States policy, I visited four important countries of the region, consulting Saudi Arabia on the matter".

"At no point during the talks did we adopt an accusatory tone, nor were we apologetic", the minister told the Pakistan Senate, the Dawn said.

He said all these countries have advised Pakistan to hold talks with the US.

"We believe that the global community should recognise the efforts made by Pakistan in counter-terrorism", Geng said.

Khawaja Asif said we have also conveyed our message to the visiting US Secretary of State in clear words that Pakistan would neither made any compromises nor surrender on all national interests and the government was only accountable to the Parliament.

"And with no cap on student visas, we continue to attract the best and brightest students to our world class universities - 160,000 Indian students over the past ten years", Field said.

According to a report in the Hindustan Times, which broke the story, Tillerson's discussions on the BRI centred around India and the United States "joining hands in providing a rule-based and transparent funding alternative" among countries that had signed up to the Chinese BRI.

"Yes, there is a trust deficit, but we are talking", Asif said, adding that there was a willingness on both sides to bridge this deficit.

"The role of these countries in solving the dispute is indispensable", Asif added.

He said that Pakistan desires peace in Afghanistan and is making efforts, but a large portion of the restive nation is controlled by the Islamic State.

Asif said a decrease in the frequency of drone attacks inside Pakistan was a clear manifestation of the fact that Pakistan had cleared its areas from the people who used to become reason for violation of country's airspace and sovereignty. The foreign minister added Pakistan had agreed on reconciliation in the past but it was to no avail.

Following the meeting between Pakistani officials and Rex Tillerson in Islamabad, Asif ─ who was a member of the Pakistani delegation ─ said that the American delegation was informed that Washington's allegations against Pakistan of offering safe havens to terrorists and protecting the Haqqani network are incorrect.

He said Pakistan had managed to restore peace in its territory to a great extent and the number of drone strikes had decreased as compared to that in previous years.

He also dismissed the possibility of economic sanctions by the U.S.in case it does not tackle the issue of Taliban, saying that Pakistan only received "a trickle" of economic assistance from America.

Asif also mentioned that Jamaatud Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed's name was not on the list of 75 militants the United States had handed over to Pakistan.
