The BJP's move comes after around 18 opposition parties announced that they would observe November 8 as "black day" against demonetisation which they termed as the government's "most ill-conceived decision".

It was observed that the amount expense of demonetization and printing of new notes were much higher than the black money expected and yet to return.

Talking to ANI, Tharoor said, "It is absolutely shocking to see that the BJP has a goal to celebrate anti-black money day on November 8". The Congress had adequate opportunities to be in power and I can not recollect a single significant step that they ever took against black money.

Alleging that the Prime Minister and the finance minister had refused to shun arrogance and autocracy", the Congress said in a statement: "Where is the recovered black money? So, for entry into the lawful system, you are liable to pay tax. Several economists, including non-Indians, have repeatedly slammed the move and claimed that it was one of the reasons for the slowing pace of India's economy - a charge that the BJP has assiduously rejected.

"Instead of apologising for the death of over 150 people and unprecedented strike on livelihood of common Indians, the BJP is so drunk with power that it wants to celebrate the "Demon of Demonetisation", said the two Congress leaders.

"All leaders, Central and State Ministers would travel all over the country and detail the steps taken by the Government against use of black money", said Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley here at a Press conference on Wednesday.

The Congress questioned the BJP over its decision to "celebrate the first anniversary of note ban".

"Cash is bearer money in the system and its ownership is not known".

The BJP leadership has at different times given unrelated rationale for the move, with Modi initially claiming that it would end black money and curb terrorism while on other occasions BJP leaders, including Jaitley, have claimed that the move was triggered by the objective of reducing cash flow in the economy and switching to digital currency and transactions. But Rahul Gandhi's rally had an unexpected huge crowd while chairs remained vacant in Modi's rally. "The Finance Minister claiming that India's economy is the world's fastest growing is incorrect and factually wrong", Sharma told reporters.

His comments come a day after Jaitley announced a massive Rs 6.92 lakh crore package for infrastructure spending and another Rs 2.11 lakh crore for bank recapitalisation to revive investments as well as growth. "The Government has no plan to put the economy back on track", he added.
