  • Breakdown in Talks With North Korea Has US Diplomat Sounding Alarm on Capitol Hill: Sources

Now, a senior official from the North Korean Foreign Ministry has suggested that the United States take its threats seriously because Mr Ri is in close contact with leader Kim Jong-un.

The remarks were made a few hours after President Trump threatened to "totally destroy" the country in a speech to the UN. "If you think this will lead to diplomacy, you're deeply mistaken", Ri said.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho said last month Pyongyang may consider conducting "the most powerful detonation" of a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean amid rising tensions with the US.

North Korea has been quiet lately, but the regime is threatening a serious provocation.

"The foreign minister is very well aware of the intentions of our supreme leader, so I think you should take his words literally", Ri Yong-pil, a senior diplomat in North Korea's Foreign Ministry, told CNN in an interview aired on Wednesday.

Dramatically upping the stakes as it showcases its bolstered military prowess, North Korea last month conducted its first test of a powerful hydrogen bomb.

A state editorial condemning North Korea's nuclear test in September also reprimanded the U.S. for its "belligerent tone", cautioning that "military exercises on DPRK's doorstep ate into Pyongyang's sense of security" and suggesting that North Korea suspend its military programs in exchange for the suspension of military exercises.

Meanwhile North Korea's ambassador called on the UN Security Council on Wednesday to urgently discuss the recent U.S. joint naval exercise near the Korean peninsula, calling it preparation for a pre-emptive strike and nuclear war against his country.

The North Korean state media continued its propaganda campaign against Mr Trump overnight too. They're pressuring us on all fronts with sanctions. The U.S. does, however, take North Korean threats with a grain of salt.

President Trump will be in South Korea during his trip to Asia next month but will most likely forgo a visit to the heavily fortified border with between North Korea, a senior White House official told CNN.
