  • Police officers were killed in the shootout

The Ministry of Interior said in a statement late yesterday that a number of policemen were killed and injured, and some terrorists also died in the ensuing crossfire.

State television said Saturday a security alert was declared in the area to hunt down militants.

The firefight occurred in the Bahariya oasis on the Western Desert, about 85 miles (135 km) southwest of the capital, after security forces received information on the militants' location.

BBC reported that more than 50 police officers were killed during clashes, while local media said 35 citing security sources.

Egypt has been battling an insurgency since 2013 when the military deposed Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, in a coup.

But an AFP reporter did not see the strongman leader at an open-air ceremony involving foreign dignitaries, and his office said he had cancelled his participation in a number of other engagements. The Muslim Brotherhood has denied any involvement in violent attacks against security forces.

No terrorist group claimed responsibility of the attack.

Hundreds of police and army personnel have been killed since then.

In their statements, none of the militant groups claim any affiliation to the Muslim Brotherhood.

But unlike their parent organization in Iraq and Syria, they have been unable to seize population centers in the peninsula, which borders Israel and Gaza.

Egypt has been under a state of emergency since earlier in the year when IS militants launched a series of bombings and suicide attacks that killed scores of Coptic Christians.
