  • Google Celebrates Selena Quintanilla's Debut Album With Stellar Anniversary Doodle

Selena Quintanilla, who was born in Lake Jackson, Tex., in 1971, was murdered in 1995 by the president of her fan club in Corpus Christi.

And if you've clicked on the fanciful illustration of Selena, you've seen the roughly minute-and-a-half video that follows, created to celebrate the release of her debut eponymous album Selena, which came out October 17, 1989, according to Forbes.

Selena Quintanilla - better known as Selena - joins Dolores del Rio, Gilberto Bosques Saldívar, Juana Paula Manso, Carmen Miranda and Chava Flores in the list of Latinos honored by Google through its doodle, image that frames the most used web browser. I even sang Selena classics in talent shows across northeast Texas [photo evidence below, courtesy of my Mom]. She rose to stardom in the traditionally male-dominated Tejano music industry and achieved crossover fame after her death, with the release of her English language album, "Dreaming of You". On this day in 1989, Selena burst onto the scene with her iconic self-titled debut album.

Billboard talked to the Google exec behind the doodle.

Two years in the making, Selena's family collaborated closely with the Google team to ensure that the Doodle vision was appropriately fulfilled. Later in her career, Quintanilla would perform in front of jammed crowds. The police convinced to give herself up and she was sentenced to life in prison with a possible parole after 30 years.

"Selena was also much more than a talented musician".

Quintanilla is also remembered through statutes and various concerts and festivals in her hometown, and now through an worldwide Google Doodle.

"I've never seen myself on the Google homepage, and I think that's so important for so many people", Campos said. Watching her made me proud of being Mexicana.

"There were always two women who taught me I could do anything and be anything I set my mind to: my mom and Selena".

Google has also launched an online exhibit in their Arts and Culture section, further exploring the singer's life.

Sister Suzette Quintanilla said: "Google came to us with this idea of telling a story".
