One person still was reported missing at midday Monday and seven people were injured after an oil and natural gas storage transfer platform exploded Sunday night in Lake Pontchartrain near Kenner, LA.

Kenner Police Department spokesman Sgt. Brian McGregor said numerous injuries were serious.

Patrick Courreges at the Department of Natural Resources confirmed to Eyewitness News reporter David Hammer that the owner of the platform is Clovelly Oil Co., based on Poydras Street.

Search-and-rescue efforts were underway for one person who was working on the platform but was unaccounted for after the explosion, Lopinto said. "Search and rescue was conducted throughout the night, and [Monday] morning we were able to learn more about what happened on that rig.We certainly have the families of the victims in our thoughts during this hard time".

The seven injured people were taken to the hospital.

Kenner city officials said authorities at the scene reported that cleaning chemicals ignited on the surface of the oil rig platform, causing the blast Sunday night.

The Kenner Fire Department, Kenner Police Department, Eastbay Consolidated Fire Department, US Coast Guard and Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department all assisted in responding to the incident. He said the department's current goal is to stop oil flow and, if needed, let it burn off safely.

Social media users reported hearing a loud noise that even rattled some homes. "At first I thought it was a sonic boom or something, I had no idea what was happening".

According to him, the scene was sent to a rescue boat.

Reports came into the Emergency Operations center around 8 p.m. of fire and smoke being seen from Lake Pontchartrain.

It's a brackish tidal basin that is fed both by the Gulf of Mexico and by fresh water from rivers and streams in 16 Louisiana parishes and four MS counties.

The Coast Guard will be conducting a water quality evaluation as well as the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation.
