London mayor Sadiq Khan - who has clashed with Mr Trump on Twitter - said he "would not object" to a working visit.

A foreign office spokesperson said, "Our position on the state visit has not changed-an offer has been extended and President Trump has accepted".

May's offer of a State Visit, an honour usually reserved for USA presidents in their second term, sparked mass protests and a petition calling for its cancellation.

MPs from across the political aisle criticised the invitation at the time and John Bercow, the Commons Speaker, announced he would oppose an address to Parliament.

But the lack of any mention of a U.S. presidential visit in the Queens speech earlier this year, which sets the agenda for all major visits hosted by the monarch, had confirmed that the trip had been postponed indefinitely.

Thousands of people launched protests against the move, while more than a million people signed a petition to stop the trip from going ahead.

The visit was also likely to see widespread protests.

The visit will not include a stay with the Queen like Barack Obama enjoyed in 2011.

U.S. National Security Council Michael Anton disputed the report, stating that Trump's visit to the United Kingdom had not been scheduled.

Since then the visit has been quietly put on the backburner.

However a White House spokesperson denied the topic had been discussed.

The ongoing controversy over whether President Donald Trump will be heading to Britain to meet Queen Elizabeth took a new turn on Wednesday.

In July there was speculation that Trump would visit his Scottish golf course and then Downing Street after the G20 summit in Hamburg, as part of a European trip that included a big speech in Warsaw.
