Gauri Lankesh killing: SIT releases sketches of 2 suspects

15 October, 2017, 00:46 | Author: Priscilla Morrison
  • RSS paid their tribute to a list of people from various walks of life including journalist Gauri Lankesh

"It is suspected that these persons stayed in the area near the residence of Gauri Lankesh", he said.

"In this case, the accused has taken precautions to hide himself, very consciously, something as simple as wearing a helmet while surveying the house". "If anybody thinks that they may have seen people who look similar to the faces in the sketches must inform us", Singh said.

Singh further said that the SIT can not confirm if the weapons used were the same as those in the murder of rationalist MM Kalburgi.

"The assailants have not used mobile phones for this operation". There has, however, been no evidence to prove that it was the same gun used in the murder of Prof M M Kalburgi. It has sought public help to nab the culprits. To a follow-up question on the weapons having matched with those used in the other cases, he said: "No, there is no FSL report that says that the weapon used has matched with the one used in the Kalburgi case or any other case".

The SIT, also released a clipping of the suspect riding a bike in a white formal shirt (TOI reported first that the suspect was seen in a white shirt and black pants on September 13).

The SIT released two CCTV footages from the date of crime i.e., September 5, 2017. "CCTV footage captured shows the suspects with their visor up, and using technology we could get the sketch". The police suspect that the killers could be in the age group of 25 and 30.

"We are confident that these are the killers".

"Can't ascertain religion of suspects by external appearances like tilak or earrings as it could be done to mislead", Singh said.

The SIT held a press conference for the first time ever since its formation following Gauri Lankesh's brutal murder.

While the investigators have ruled out the angle that it is Gauri's writings as a journalist that led to her killing, they are now pursuing the social activism angle vigorously that could have instigated the killers.

The SIT appealed the members of general public to provide any information they might have about the sketches or details of the motorcycle or its rider.
