  • Details of new Hamas-Fatah reconciliation deal to be announced this afternoon

Rival Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas have signed a reconciliation deal - the biggest step forward in intra-Palestinian relations in a decade.

Palestinian member of Fatah Central Committee, Azam al-Ahmed (R), and Hamas deputy head of the politburo Saleh al-Aruri (L) sign an agreement between the two Palestinian factions as Egyptian Intelligence Minister Khalid Fawzi (C, back) looks, in Cairo, Egypt, 12 October 2017.

In 2014 a deal was struck, however Hamas reneged on the agreement and continued to rule over Gaza.

The latest reconciliation efforts come as US President Donald Trump has sought to revive peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians and met separately with Abbas and Netanyahu on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in NY last month.

The meetings in Cairo are centred around implementing the 2011 Cairo Agreement between the two political parties, in hopes of ending the 10-year political schism.

Also under the deal, Gaza's border crossings with Israel and Egypt will be handed back to the Palestinian Authority in the coming weeks, with a November 1 deadline, according to Ahmad.

"Hamas and Fatah will hold a fresh round of talks in Cairo on December 1 to assess implementation of the agreement", the source said. A senior Fatah leader in the Gaza Strip, Zakaria al-Agha, said that Abbas "will be in Gaza within less than a month". In June 2007, its militants seized power in the Gaza Strip.

The official was referring to the diplomatic Quartet on Middle East peace, which includes the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russian Federation.

Hamas does not recognise Israel and has fought three wars with the Jewish state since 2008. "Unity and national reconciliation among the Palestinian people are our strategic option for moving forward".

Attempts at reconciliation in recent years fell apart.

There was no indication that an understanding had been reached on the fate of Hamas's armed wing, a sticking point which analysts have said could yet scupper reconciliation efforts.

Ahead of the negotiations in Cairo, Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu warned against "fake reconciliations" and stated once again that Israel demands the demilitarization of Hamas.
