  • Amazon is now going after teens

Parents must add their teens (aged 13 to 17) to their Household account, a free process, after which point the teens are able to use their own login more or less as if it were their own independent account.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) already offers a steep discount for its Prime service for college students, but the e-commerce giant just made its trademark free shipping and video streaming service even more accessible. Parents can either sign up their teen, or a teen can send an invitation to mom or dad via SMS or email.

"As a parent of a teen, I know how they crave independence, but at the same time that has to be balanced with the convenience and trust that parents need".

Under Amazon's new program, teenagers can log into the site using their own credentials.

Parents can set up the teen accounts in two ways.

The second way has parents giving their teens monthly spending limits so their Amazon shopping doesn't get out of hand. "We've listened to families and have built a great experience for both teens and parents", Michael Carr, vice president of Amazon Households, said in a statement. The accounts will allow them to search and shop for items, but there are some restrictions so that parents don't have to worry about their bank accounts. This means that a parent with a Prime account can share the benefits that come with it with their children. "Parents receive itemized notifications for every order and can cancel and return any item in accordance with Amazon's policies". They can also set up other details for the account.

The new monthly program totals about $65 a year, but Amazon doesn't require a yearlong commitment.
