Trump finds new ways to condemn reporting he doesn't like

  • Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was heard calling Trump a'moron after the July meeting where the president said he wanted the U.S. nuclear stockpile to grow back to Cold War numbers

Trump was discussing a report by NBC News, saying it was fake.

The FCC is an independent USA agency that issues spectrum licenses to television broadcasters.

It was the same meeting where Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also reportedly called Trump a "moron".

Broadcast licenses have previously been revoked by authoritarian leaders including the late former president of Venezuela Hugo Chavez, who revoked a number of broadcast licenses of stations that displayed stringent anti-Chavez views.

"It's frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write", Trump said.

If implemented, Trump's proposal would "make Americans less safe, could cause another nuclear arms race, and would inflame tensions with North Korea and other countries", Martin concluded.

Both Bennet and DeGette are Democrats.

A White House officials told NBC the nuclear arsenal was not the meeting's primary topic, and Pentagon spokesperson Dana White commented that Defense Secretary James Mattis "has many closed sessions with the president and his cabinet members".

President Trump came out forcefully against the claims, writing on Twitter that the story was "pure fiction" and "made up to demean".

Officials told NBC News that Trump was presented with a chart that illustrated the decline in the size of the United States nuclear arsenal, which now includes 4,000 weapons, during the summer Pentagon meeting. "That's scary to me, even if the president is somebody I happen to like".

"Trump indicated he wanted a bigger stockpile, not the bottom position on that downward-sloping curve", NBC News reported, adding that those present were surprised by the request.

Trump's tweet "is not a meaningful threat", Schwartzman also said.

Sen. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) wrote a letter to Pai today, urging the chairman to "maintain the FCC's charter as an independent agency and withstand any urges from President Trump to harm the news media and infringe upon the First Amendment".

The president's suggestion is unlikely to do much to ease his frustrations.

In the same interview, Conway apologized for a bit of fake news she created on her own: The "Bowling Green massacre", a nonexistent terror attack Conway used as justification for Trump's travel bans.

Markey asked Pai to "publicly refuse to challenge the license of any broadcaster because the president dislikes its coverage".
