  • Key men Tom Rogic and Tim Cahill will have big roles to play against Syria on Tuesday night

A dramatic extra-time header from Australia legend Tim Cahill ensured the Socceroos kept their World Cup hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over war-torn Syria.

The victor of the playoff will face the fourth-placed team in CONCACAF (currently Panama) in a two-leg contest to secure a spot at next year's World Cup.

Without five first-choice players through injury or suspension, they also had to play most of extra time with 10 men after midfielder Mahmoud Al Mawas was dismissed for two yellow cards.

As Syria crashed out of contention to secure a spot in World Cup to be held in Russian Federation in 2018, Australia's hopes are still alive.

"It doesn't matter who we play next".

Who else but Cahill could come up with such heroics? Robbie Kruse found space on the left-edge of the box and crossed for Cahill to head in his 50th worldwide goal for Australia.

He converted an 85th-minute penalty last week to secure the draw in Malaysia, and he opened the scoring in the return leg to silence a parochial 42,136 crowd at Sydney's Olympic stadium. In the end, it took superb crosses from Leckie and Kruse to allow Cahill to find the back of the net through trademark powerful headers from close range.

Australian midfielder Mark Milligan said: "The next round will be a different match, we will have a different challenge on our hands". His defence has been particularly badly hit but Hakeem believes the never- say-die attitude his team have shown throughout qualifying will enable them to hold out the Asian champions.

"I'm proud of everything we have done together and how we can help kids watching to follow their dreams".

The key pair's absence will be a blow, especially given Australia will play the first leg in tough away conditions, but Postecoglou backed his depth.

For the next 30 minutes Al Hakim fumed in his technical area until the full-time whistle blew and he was free to let loose on Ange Postecoglou. They will learn their opponent on Wednesday but it looms most likely as Panama or Honduras.
