A spokesperson for LSU Athletics says that Tittle, a native of Marshall, Tx., passed away overnight.

Tittle was a star quarterback at LSU and earned first-team All-SEC selections in 1946 and 1947.

Tittle was the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers' "Million-Dollar Backfield" in the 1950s, and he and wide receiver R.C. Owens developed the alley-oop pass there.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971.

LSU Football confirmed his death on Twitter.

The Detroit Lions selected Tittle with the sixth choice in the 1948 NFL Draft, but he signed with the upstart All-American Football Conference's Baltimore Colts, joining the NFL when the team did in 1950.

Tittle only spent four seasons with the Giants at the back end of his career, but that didn't keep him from being viewed as a legend in the eyes of Big Blue fans. Before the 1961 season, Tittle's esteem was low to the point that the 49ers exchanged the 34-year-old QB to the Giants for a new kid on the block hostile lineman (Lou Cordileone). While with the 49ers, Tittle had his first of three All-Pro seasons.

Tittle had memory problems later in life related to dementia.

Tittle ended up retiring after the 1964 season with 33,070 career yards and 242 career touchdown passes. In 1957, Tittle drove the National Football League with 176 pass fruitions, which practically appears to be preposterous when you understand that just a single other player in the group that year finished more than 140 passes.

Tittle was named the league MVP in 1963.
