Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein announced Monday she will pursue a sixth term, ending speculation that the Senate's oldest member could sit out the election amid criticism from the party's progressive wing.
The announcement was first tweeted by an unverified Twitter account affiliated with Feinstin. In a post on Facebook she writes, "I'm immensely proud of my service in the Senate and all I've done to help the people of California and the nation".
Feinstein, who was the mayor of San Francisco for a decade before her Senate career, has been among the most outspoken voices on issues like gun violence and torture during her long legislative tenure.
But California's senior senator, a Democratic party stalwart, is leaning on her record as the first woman to be the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee and her role on the Senate Intelligence Committee as the reasons she should stay in office, the Los Angeles Times reported. Feinstein turned 84 on June 22 and will be 91 at the conclusion of her next term.
Feinstein said she supports DACA, but acknowledged the administration's argument that the order is on shaky legal ground. Adam B. Schiff, Eric Swalwell and Brad Sherman, were said to be preparing for a Senate campaign if Feinstein opted to retire. "Let's beat the most pro-Trump Blue-state Dem in the country!"
Feinstein also has continuously expressed reservations about the so-called single-payer health care plan championed by many progressives, including Vermont Independent Sen.
The rising liberal star Sen. "I'm in a position where I can be effective, and hopefully that means something to California", she said. "What Californians get from Dianne is someone who sticks to her principles and achieves results regardless of powerful opponents, from the assault weapons ban to the Central Intelligence Agency torture report".
Asked about a poll that half of California voters don't think she should run, she added: "Oh look".
