United Nations fears 'further exodus' of Muslim Rohingya

  • Divided Asean urged to act on Rohingya crisis

Rohingya civilians began fleeing Myanmar after Rohingya insurgents attacked police posts there on August 25, prompting security forces to launch a counter-offensive which the United Nations has described as "a textbook case of ethnic cleansing". But as the number of newcomers has exceeded 500,000 - adding to 300,000 already in Bangladesh - another 1,000 acres has been set aside for the new camp. "All of those who are living in scattered places. would be brought into one place". Jewel's father, Babul Hossain, told the French news agency, AFP.

Last month, wild elephants trampled two refugees to death and Rahman said more such encounters appeared inevitable as more forest is destroyed. This week Bangladesh reported 4-5,000 civilians crossing the border each day after a brief lull in arrivals, with 10,000 more waiting at a frontier area.

Rights groups say more than half of more than 400 Rohingya villages in the north of Rakhine state have been torched in a campaign by the security forces and Buddhist vigilantes to drive out Muslims.

But UNICEF chief Anthony Lake and UN emergency relief coordinator Mark Lowcock said in an appeal for $430 million to provide aid that "the needs (of the Rohingya) are growing at a faster pace than our ability to meet them".

On Saturday, Hasina reiterated that the settlements for Rohingya Muslims would be temporary until they returned to their homes in Myanmar.

The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) did not comment on the action it would take after the ceasefire ends Monday, but continued to affirm that it was "determined to stop the tyranny and oppression" facing the Rohingya people.

The shadowy, poorly-armed Arsa tipped northern Rakhine into crisis when it ambushed police posts on Aug 25.

Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) welcomes the decision by Khairy Jamaluddin to engage with the Myanmar embassy with regards to the persecution and killing of ethnic Rohingya in Rakhine, Myanmar.

The minister announced his visit about a week after Dhaka and Nay Pyi Taw agreed to establish a joint working group soon to repatriate Rohingya people who have crossed into Bangladesh.

As part of its appeal for $430m (R5.9bn) to provide aid for those displaced, the United Nations earlier this week warned of the vast pressure to accommodate refugees who have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh.
