  • Five toddlers burned alive in arson attack on nursery

A firefighter in the city of Janauba said on Thursday that the guard was among those injured and was in serious condition. He died in hospital of his wounds.

The incident occurred in a modest quarter of Janauba, a city of 70,000 about 600km north of Belo Horizonte city.

Authorities have identified the security guard as 50-year-old Damiao Soares dos Santos.

Police said a security guard allegedly set fire to the building at the Innocent Children's People Municipal Education Centre in Janaúba, Brazil.

The incident left the perpetrator "with burns all over his body", Bruno Ataide Santos, director of the local hospital stated.

The office of Janauba's mayor decreed seven days of mourning.

The attacker threw gasoline on himself, the children and the nursery before setting the whole room on fire.

Although the motive behind this atrocious attack still remains unclear, police superintendent, Renato Nunes, told Hoje em Dia newspaper that the guard had had mental health problems since 2014 and often sought the prosecutor's office to denounce his own mother.

Officers found numerous bottles of alcohol at his home, Nunes said.

The children who died were each 4 years old. "As the children were bigger a lot of them were able to escape".

Brazil's President Michel Temer expressed his condolences via Twitter. I, who am a father, imagine that this must be a most painful loss.
