Jim Kenney: Immigrants will distrust Philly police after ICE arrests

02 October, 2017, 00:31 | Author: Priscilla Morrison
  • Officials arrested nearly 500 illegal immigrants living in sanctuary cities across the country this week according to ICE

The operation, dubbed "Safe City", targeted undocumented immigrants with criminal convictions, pending criminal charges, gang affiliations or those who have fled and re-entered the country following a previous deportation, the agency said on Thursday.

The sanctuary cities targeted in the operation included: Philadelphia (107), Los Angeles (101), Denver (63), MA (50), NY (45), Portland (33), Cook Counties (30) and Santa Clara (27), Baltimore (28) and Washington DC (14).

The operation targeted cities where ICE deportation officers were denied access to jails and prisons to interview suspected violators of federal immigration law, as well as jurisdictions where ICE detainers were not honored. OR is one of those jurisdictions.

ICE has criticized sanctuary cities and specifically the Bay State for practices it says "shield criminal aliens and create a magnet for illegal immigration". 9, ICE had made 43% more arrests year-over-year, reports the Washington Post. Of the total Bay Area arrestees, 23 had criminal convictions including drug possession, assault, domestic violence and DUI, and four were previously deported and deemed criminal aliens by federal authorities.

Cross said the county's sheriff, Mike Reese, has adopted a hard-core sanctuary policy toward ICE.

After some jurisdictions began limiting cooperation with ICE in recent years during the Obama administration, immigration officials prioritized people with criminal convictions released from local jails.

"Public safety is about all of us being safe from the hands of Trump's criminalization machine and can not be defined by ICE agents who knock down the doors of our homes with guns and drag people out in front of their children", Almiron said in a statement.

San Francisco-based ICE agents arrested 21 people in Santa Clara County and six in San Francisco in the past week for alleged immigration violations.

These included 28 arrests in Baltimore, 30 in Chicago, 63 in Denver, 101 in Los Angeles, 45 in NY and 50 in the state of MA. Others had broken immigration law, which is not a criminal offense.

The most recent statistics from ICE show that arrests of unauthorized immigrants have climbed 37 percent nationally from January to June -compared with the same period in 2016. Baker said he and state officials did not know about the raids in advance. Also highlighted was a Salvadorian citizen who entered the country illegally and was convicted of having sex with a minor under 16. In a press release, ICE Acting Director Tom Homan reiterated that point. All but a few had prior criminal convictions and four had been previously deported, Schwab said. President Donald Trump has blasted sanctuary cities for their lenient attitudes toward immigrants without a legal status, threatening to remove federal funding and showing his support for "beautiful Kate Steinle", who was "gunned down in S.F.by an illegal immigrant".
