  • Southern District Of NY Announces Federal Criminal Charges In College Basketball

Federal prosecutors have announced charges of fraud and corruption in college basketball, including against four coaches.

Ten people have been charged across the country, and the Justice Department says more charges could be coming.

The other three assistant coaches charged are Chuck Person of Auburn, Emanuel Richardson of the University of Arizona, and Tony Bland of the University of Southern California. Evans served under IL coach Brad Underwood when the two coached at Oklahoma State during the 2016-17 campaign.

Joon Kim, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY, said in a press conference Tuesday that "the coaches affirmatively lied to the players and their families". "In steering players to a financial adviser who it turns out who was actually working for the government".

Oklahoma State assistant basketball coach Lamont Evans has turned himself in to authorities Wednesday morning at the U.S. Marshals Office, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Prosecutors said that while some of the bribe money went to athletes and their families, some went to coaches, to get them to use their influence over their potentially NBA-bound players. The charges stem from Evans' time at SC as well as OSU.

Court papers describe a secretly recorded meeting at a Manhattan hotel last December where Person told an Auburn player that he knew some of his help was "a violation ... of rules, but this is how the National Basketball Association players get it done, they get early relationships, and they form partnerships, they form trust".

Evans was named to the Oklahoma State staff a month later, on April 4.

The scheme involved Evans allegedly taking bribes from these advisers to get his players to sign with their agencies. The other investigation was into bribes from shoe companies to players and coaches to influence players to sign with certain schools.

Evans coached at Carolina from 2012 to 2016 before taking the Oklahoma State job in April of past year.

"These are serious accusations that are not consistent with University of SC values".

They said Person also claimed to pay $18,500 of that sum to two players' families. Behavior like this will not be tolerated in our programs. Of course, we will cooperate with investigators and we look forward to justice being done in this case.
