  • Hurricane Jose strengthens slightly 500 miles south of Bermuda: NHC

Lee became the 11th named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane season Saturday but the NHC in its 11 a.m. advisory dropped the storm to a depression.

The storm, with winds extending 70 miles outward, is moving toward the west at 12 mph, the center said.

The government of Barbados has issued a hurricane warning for the Caribbean island of Dominica as Tropical Storm Maria makes its way toward the Leeward Islands already battered by Hurricane Irma, the U.S. National Hurricane Center has said.

The center added that tropical storm watches were possible for the U.S. East Coast later in the day and advised people from North Carolina to New England to monitor Jose's progress.

It was centered about 355 miles (575 kilometers) south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and was moving north at 9 mph (15 kph).

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced that Tropical Storm Jose regains its strength and became a hurricane again on Friday afternoon, bringing maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour and moves northwest at 9 miles per hour within the Atlantic Ocean. "These swells are likely to cause unsafe surf and rip current conditions".

Tropical Storm Maria will become Hurricane Maria on Sunday, according to the latest forecast.

The hurricane-battered islands of the Caribbean prepared on Sunday to face yet another potential disaster, with forecasters saiding that Tropical Storm Maria is likely to hit the Leeward Islands as a strengthening hurricane by Monday night. On Saturday evening, after Maria got its name, a hurricane watch was issued for Barbuda, Antigua, St. Kitts, Nevis, and Montserrat.

Hurricane Jose may threaten New York City and other areas of the US East Coast by next week, according to the US National Hurricane Centre. The Eastern Seaboard may begin experiencing unsafe surf and rip currents from the storm this weekend; those impacts are already underway in the Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico.

Jose barely remains a hurricane as it continues to to head toward New England.

Tropical storm warnings have been issued for coastal MA and Rhode Island. A watch is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations hard or unsafe. Unfortunately, this looks like it could be another very risky hurricane for parts of the Lesser Antilles, U.S. and British Virgin islands, and Puerto Rico.

Still, some forecasters see Jose staying far enough offshore to avoid any major impact to the US.

Little change in strength is forecast through Monday, and Lee is expected to weaken to a depression on Tuesday.
