France defends Iran nuclear deal, Trump to decide soon

"I don't think you've heard the end of it, believe me", Trump said.

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini is chairing the closed-door meeting to discuss the 2015 deal that President Donald Trump has threatened to scrap unless it is re-opened for negotiations.

If the United States decides to break the agreement, Rouhani said that "any choice and any option" are open for Iran "that we see as beneficial to our country" but he dismissed Trump's "baseless accusation" that the nuclear deal may be providing cover for Iran's eventual construction of nuclear weapons.

Rouhani, speaking Wednesday, derided the tough talk about his country delivered a day earlier by President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the launch of this year's General Assembly in NY.

He said: "I declare before you that the Islamic Republic of Iran will not be the first country to violate the agreement".

President Trump slammed the Iranian nuclear deal in his inaugural address to the United Nations in NY on Tuesday.

"Trump's ignorant hate speech belongs in medieval times - not the 21st Century UN - unworthy of a reply", Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran's lead negotiator for the nuclear agreement, said on Twitter.

Trump signed waivers on nuclear sanctions against Iran again Thursday, keeping the U.S.in compliance with its end of the agreement that offered Iran relief from crippling global sanctions in exchange for inspections on its nuclear facilities and limits on its nuclear capabilities. "Iran has not lived up to the terms of the agreement", Jubeir told reporters.

Tillerson is speaking after meeting with the parties to the deal, including Iran.

TILLERSON: As a long-time negotiator, I learned to never say never.

"We are the same people who rescued the Jews from Babylonian servility", he said, referring to the Jewish communities established in Persia after they wer expelled by the Babylonians from Judea in the sixth century BCE. But he has not fulfilled that promise, opting instead to periodically extend sanctions relief to Iran.

The Iranian leader said that Trump on Tuesday "was extremely offensive to the people of Iran and before anything, we are waiting for Mr Trump to issue an apology to the people of Iran". North Korea conducted a series of provocative launches in recent months, including a pair of intercontinental missiles believed capable of striking the continental United States and another pair that soared over Japanese territory.

Thus far, the United Nations nuclear watchdog and the US State Department have reported that Tehran has complied with the terms of the nuclear deal.

"The world will have lost a great opportunity, but such unfortunate behavior will never impede Iran's course of progress and advancement", Rouhani said.

Though the Trump administration is now mulling whether to leave the Iran deal, they have made a series of procedural steps, such as extending sanctions relief for Iran, that have kept the 2015 nuclear deal going.

Nima Chitsaz, a translator for state broadcaster IRIB, said he had decided in the heat of the moment to spare his Persian-speaking viewers from the verbal attacks by the US president.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that abandoning the nuclear treaty would come at a "high cost" to Washington.

"I've been suffering a lot, me and my family back home in Iran, and I am hoping for a democracy in Iran one day", said Golshan, who's 57.

Then, on Wednesday afternoon, the Commander of U.S. Strategic Command, General John Hyten, in a speech at the Hudson Institute, said, "The facts are that Iran is operating under the agreement that we signed up for under JCPOA..."

The site, in southern Israel, will fly a USA flag and strengthen the region's defenses, said Brigadier General Tzvika Heimowitz, head of Israeli missile defenses. Leaders from those countries, who had previously expressed concern that Iran was striving to develop nuclear weapons, agreed in return to loosen economic sanctions on Iran. He added that Iran remains fully committed to the pact, Press TV reported. Tillerson added that he did not know that Trump would say Wednesday that a decision had been made.

It's unclear if threatening the return of USA sanctions is enough to leverage either option, especially when other countries who have already begun investing in Iran and would likely not follow suit unless Iran was clearly violating the existing deal.
