The U.S. Geological Survey says the epicenter was in Puebla state, about 120 kilometers southeast of Mexico City.

As Mexico City residents and rescuers dig out of the rubble following a 7.1 magnitude natural disaster Tuesday, the parents of a Topeka native who was in the city during the quake said Wednesday their daughter is safe in Tijuana.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake was centred near Raboso in Puebla state, 76 miles (123km) southeast of Mexico City, but the shaking in the capital was nearly as intense. The country was hit by another major quake (measuring 8.1 magnitude) just two weeks prior, that had killed dozens and injured thousands.

President Enrique Pena Nieto visited a three-story school in the capital city that collapsed and was the site of one of the rescue operations.

Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said buildings at 44 locations had collapsed or were badly damaged.

Mexico City is especially prone to severe damage because it is built on an ancient lakebed that amplifies the effect of earthquakes.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office is advising travellers to contact your airline in the first instance if you are due to fly out to Mexico City on September 19th-20th - airlines such as Aeromexico, for example are allowing free route and date changes, for example.

As buildings crumbled like cardboard houses, clouds of dust bellowed out, killing more than 200 (at the time of filing this piece) people.

The video is echoed by a number of others filmed across Mexico City as the terrifying quake tore through churches, hospitals and schools. The quake that shook Mexico yesterday, with more than 200 confirmed dead, struck on the same date as one three decades ago that killed more than 10,000 people. Several people died at the site, but workers shouted "Yes, we can!" when a survivor was carried out of the wreckage. "We are with you and will be there for you", Trump said.

In Cuernavaca, a city in Morelos that is a popular destination for weekend visitors from Mexico City, there were reports on local radio of people trapped beneath collapsed buildings.

"The Embassy of Malaysia in Mexico City informed that four Malaysians residing in Mexico City are safe", it said in a statement on Wednesday. These are said to include a six-storey block of flats, a supermarket and a factory.
