Betsy DeVos's Back-To-School Message At Odds with What Parents Want

"Arts education has inarguably saved me", wrote one student who detailed her struggles with mental health.

"This is a great example here of meeting students where they're at and really addressing the needs in a community", said Besty DeVos.

Kansas City Academy is known for strongly supporting students with alternative lifestyles, but no one asked DeVos about eliminating a federal policy that allowed students to use rest rooms matching their gender identity.

Devos will visit a school in Missouri before heading to in on the last day of the tour. The Social Justice Senior Seminar (what other local school would fathom such a group?) made a decision to create an all-school booklet to give to DeVos.

I believe she came with genuine curiosity to learn firsthand about the collaboration between public and private entities: Zoo School.

Anything less reeks of self-preservation for administrators, not survival of the fittest schools for our kids. "We want to encourage local education leaders to continue to be creative, to empower parents with options and to expand student-centered education opportunities".

She didn't say how the rules would change but said her office would seek feedback from the public and universities on new rules. Yet, at the same time, Congress seems to have no plans to enact the stronger support for neighborhood public schools parents prefer.

Parents and board members also attended the tour. After Gary, she was scheduled to go to the Hope Academy in Indianapolis - which assists high school students recovering from addiction - before concluding her day at a Hancock County High School football game and hog roast. Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt and school board president Rosie Washington were also present for her visit.

Ms. DeVos will wrap up her tour of West and Midwest schools in IN on Friday. I hope Secretary DeVos found a warmer welcome inside the Zoo School to see for herself what competition, public and private, can do to push American education toward distinction.

In a statement, Indiana Democratic Party chair John Zody criticized DeVos' visit.

"So much of our curriculum has been focused on the average student, and yet we know that no student is average", DeVos said.
