Trump also used the moment to argue on Twitter that his travel ban targeting six mostly Muslim nations should be "far larger, tougher and more specific - but stupidly, that would not be politically correct!"

His tweets about the London attack will attract similar accusations of carelessness.

US President Donald Trump has claimed Scotland Yard knew about the Parsons Green Tube bomber.

Britain's senior counterterrorism officer Mark Rowley told a news conference the explosion was caused by a suspected improvised explosive device (IED).

A senior US government official cast doubt on whether Trump was privy to information over whether the bomber in the west London attack was known or not.

The bomb exploded on a packed train during rush hour on Friday, leaving at least 22 people injured but no one seriously hurt.

The Prime Minister's response was echoed by her former chief of staff, Nick Timothy, who tweeted: "True or not - and I'm sure he doesn't know - this is so unhelpful from leader of our ally and intelligence partner".

In short remarks to reporters, Trump said he had been briefed on the explosion but did not elaborate on what he meant in his reference to Scotland Yard. The incident is being treated as terrorism by the police. He added. "The internet is their main recruitment tool which we must cut off & use better!" "This is a live investigation and we will provide further updates as it progresses", the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

The President did share highly classified intelligence about suspected IS plans, until then closely guarded among U.S. allies, with the Russian foreign minister during a meeting at the White House.

The whole event was a little surreal: the President had gone outside to watch an 11-year-old called Frankie Giaccio mow the lawn (Frankie had written to the White House asking if he could) and ended up talking global affairs.

The Sun Reports that Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced: "a manhunt is underway".

Trump also linked Friday's attack to his controversial travel ban, tweeting that he would be looking to intensify the ban on travel to the United States.

Trump concluded, "Must be proactive & nasty!"
