The bill also prevents local and state law enforcement from detaining someone over an immigration hold request.

On Friday, the State Assembly approved Senate Bill 54 by a vote of 49-to-25.

California lawmakers are preparing to vote on a "sanctuary state" bill that would expand protections for people living in the country illegally who come into contact with law enforcement. They've also approved money for legal assistance and college scholarships for people living illegally in the US, and made it harder for businesses and government agencies to disclose people's immigration status. The measure cleared the Legislature with support only from Democrats over the objection of Republicans who it will protect criminals and make it harder for law-enforcement to keep people safe.

It prohibits law enforcement officials from asking about a person's immigration status or participating in immigration enforcement efforts.

The California Values Act would forbid state and local law enforcement agencies from providing information to or acting as the deputies for federal immigration authorities.

Illinois' Republican Governor signed a bill last month protecting people from being detained because they are the subject of an immigration-related warrant. The California Police Chiefs Association is now neutral on the bill, but the California State Sheriffs' Association still opposes it.

The California State Assembly passed a package of housing bills Thursday night, potentially appropriating billions for affordable housing development and rewriting the way California cities manage new development.

Acting Director Thomas Homan says in a statement Saturday that the legislation "serves to codify a unsafe policy that deliberately obstructs our country's immigration laws".

As lawmakers considered the bill Friday another high-profile killing in San Francisco spotlighted the sanctuary issue. Jerry Brown drastically scaled back the version first introduced, the result of negotiations between Brown and De Leon in the final weeks of the legislative session.

- California is one step closer to becoming a so-called Sanctuary State. They've passed legislation and filed lawsuits aimed at protecting immigrants, combating climate change and blocking any future attempt to build a registry of Muslims.

The bill's approval comes less than a day after a federal judge blocked the Trump administration's rules requiring cities to help enforce federal immigration laws in order to receive funding.
