Stung by Anti-Semitic Speech, Facebook Limits Audience Targeting

They found the category, but because there were only 2,274 people in it, it was considered too small for them to be able to buy an ad targeted at only Jew haters.

The news site tested the service and legitimacy of the targeting categories by purchasing $30 worth of advertisements directed towards users interested in the aforementioned subjects. An algorithm automatically generates these categories based on words and phrases found in profiles, such as "gym lover", but a ProPublica report found that the system was also allowing companies to target their ads toward anti-Semites.

However, he said, there were times when information appeared on Facebook that violated its standards.

Facebook, as part of its review, noted in a post Thursday that it noticed a "small percentage" of users entering "offensive responses" in their education or employer fields on their profiles. The ads had spread divisive views on topics such as immigration, race and LGBT rights and had promoted 470 "inauthentic" pages and accounts later suspended by Facebook, according to the company. At the very least, when categories are potentially sensitive, dealing with personal data like religion, politics, and sexuality, one would think they would be verified by humans before being offered up to would-be advertisers.

The report comes a week after Facebook drew attention for disclosing that $100,000 in were placed on its platform during the 2016 election by organizations with apparent connections to Russian Federation. "In this case, we've removed the associated targeting fields in question", he said. It said the entire process was approved within 15 minutes.

This is a big deal because it could shape the styles of content created for Facebook Watch, the new original programming hub its launched where publishers earn 55% of ad revenue.

Facebook equips businesses with powerful ways to reach the right people with the right message. Facebook spokesman Joe Osborne told ProPublica, "We have looked at the use of these audiences and campaigns and it's not common or widespread".

Facebook issued a full statement on the matter, which claims "hate speech and discriminatory advertising have no place on our platform" and that "community safety is "critical to our mission".

This is another embarrassment for world's largest social media platform as it struggles with how not to be exploited by insidious people or groups and still stick to the task of what Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg's likes to say as "connecting the world".
