USA approves $5 billion fighter jet sale to Canada

Fred Cromer, president of Bombardier's commercial aircraft division, welcomed the show of support from Britain during a news conference in Montreal.

It said the principal contractors will be Boeing Co., Northrop Grumman Corp., Raytheon Co. and General Electric Co.

Boeing reiterated its stance Tuesday that it believed Bombardier sells its products in the US below cost, saying it would let the investigation continue and not drop the complaint.

"The threat facing us, as a result of the ongoing case, is alarming and goes much wider than it may immediately appear".

Boeing has launched a potentially damaging trade challenge action against Bombardier, alleging it is dumping its new C-Series passenger jets on the USA market.

Senator Kenny said Canada had "made it clear to Boeing" that it was unhappy with the aerospace firm, and said the Canadian government is now reviewing all of its purchases from Boeing.

Bombardier condemned Boeing's position as "an unfounded assault on airlines, the travelling public and further innovation in aerospace".

However, rival aircraft firm Boeing has complained to the USA authorities that the deal was unfairly subsidised by the Canadian state.




Liberal Party Senator Colin Kenny described the complaint as freaky. "I think the Trump administration is taking some time to think this through", an unnamed government source claimed.

"Unite is demanding the Prime Minister and the Government stand up for the workforce in Northern Ireland and our aerospace industry and to stand up for decent jobs", he said.

The International trade commission that is U.S. based is set to make a basic ruling in this case in the ending of this month.

The company said it had appealed to the International Trade Commission "to restore a level playing field in the USA single-aisle airplane market".

The Canadian plane maker said it was thankful the United Kingdom government "understands what is at stake and will take the actions necessary to respond to this direct attack on its aerospace industry", a Bombardier spokesperson said in an e-mail.

Boeing filed a petition with the US International Trade Commission and the US Department of Commerce in April, alleging that massive subsidies have allowed Bombardier to embark "on an aggressive campaign to dump its CSeries aircraft in the United States".

The proposed sale would include 10 single-seat F/A-18Es and eight two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet aircraft, along with a host of equipment including 100 Raytheon AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II missiles, according to the 12 September State Department notice.

Officials cited by the Times described the phone call as "constructive" and denied reports that ministers are anxious that the dispute threatens to jeapordise a post-Brexit UK-US free trade deal. "For whatever reason, they decided they weren't going to continue to have discussions with us".
