Russian Federation says that S-400 missiles are created to protect vital political, economic, administrative and military facilities from airstrikes, and are considered of the most advanced systems in the air- and anti-missiles defense.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has dismissed criticism from his North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies over his country's purchase of Russia's strategic S-400 missile defense systems, saying Ankara would not "wait for" the Western military alliance to help Ankara with security affairs.

Citing Recep Tayyip Erdo─čan, TASS and Hurriyet report that a deposit in the $2,5bn deal has already been paid.

The Turkish president says Ankara will continue to take its own security measures after the acquisition of the S-400 surface-to-air missile defence systems from Russian Federation.

The incident muddied relations between Turkey and Russia, but Erdogan has reportedly made amends with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the BBC News noted. "What were we supposed to do, wait for you?" the Turkish head of state said during a speech in Ankara on Wednesday.

In parallel to the S-400, the Turkish companies Aselsan and Roketsan signed a "Heads of Agreement" with French-Italian consortium Eurosam to fulfill the Turkish Undersecretariat of Defence Industries (SSM)'s requirement for a homegrown long-range SAM system.

Turkey faced similar worries during the Iran-Iraq War and the First and Second Gulf Wars due to the ballistic missiles possessed by those countries.

Erdogan has been critical of Washington for supporting Kurdish groups in Syria that it says are responsible for terror attacks inside Turkey.

"We have relayed our concerns to Turkish officials regarding the potential purchase of the S-400", Pentagon spokesman Johnny Michael told USA broadcaster CNBC in a statement on Tuesday. Two years later, NATO Patriot missile batteries were withdrawn from Turkey.
