Iran has signed a series of deals and memorandums of understanding with Damascus to fix Syria's electrical-power infrastructure, state media report, giving the Islamic republic a potential foothold in war-torn Syria's eventual rebuilding process.

The agreements include building a power plant in the coastal province of Latakia with a capacity of 540 megawatts and restoring the main control center for Syria's electricity grid in the capital Damascus, Press TV said.

Agreement points to the role Tehran is expected to play in the reconstruction of war-torn Syria.

During the more than six years of fighting, Syria's infrastructure has taken a tremendous hit. Electricity generation dropped by more than half from 2010 to 2014, according to the latest figures available from the OECD's International Energy Agency monitoring group.

The contract was awarded to Iranian firm Mabna and is valued at around $155 million, Syria's Electricity Minister Zuhair Kharboutli said.

Iran, along with Russian Federation, has backed President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's six-year-old civil war against USA - and Turkish-backed rebels and in the fight against the extremist group Islamic State (IS).

Mahmoudi, on the Energy Ministry website, said, "We will stand by the Syrian people to rebuild this country".

On Tuesday, state news agency SANA reported that the Syrian regime had signed a contract with an Iranian company to import five gas fired power plants to Aleppo.

He made the comments as a respond to the recent remarks of the IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano who said that his agency does not distinguish between civilian or military sites in its inspections and would ask Iran for access when necessary. "Russian Federation has also shown good support for Iran with regard to the nuclear deal".
