Signs of support for Venezuela that Pope Francis sent from Colombia

  • Slightly injured pope ends Colombia tour with unity appeal

Francis prayed in the name of local holy figures, including Saint Peter Claver, patron saint of slaves, who worked in this colonial port city helping victims of the slave trade. If you're choosing Trump over the pope, were you ever really that religious in the first place?

They said in a statement that they "informed him about the worsening of the crisis and the radicalization of the government's stance".

"Whoever denies it has to go to the scientists and ask them", Francis said. "I leave the Vatican more determined than ever to pursue PEACE in our world", Trump wrote on Twitter following his visit.

"It's not something to play with", the Pope said.

Francis said he had been moved during his four city visit to Colombia Sept. 6-10 by the desire of people in the country to have peace following an agreement last year that ended a bloody 50-year war between the government and rebel guerilla forces. Migrants, he said, must not only be welcomed, but integrated. Francis asked. "He is ghettoized, that is, he enters a ghetto". He suggested that countries might be only be able to accept a certain number of migrants before there is a danger of "non-integration".

"It is of the greatest importance that we who call ourselves disciples not cling to a certain style or to particular practices that cause us to be more like some Pharisees than like Jesus", he said. "This is not doctrine at all".

Eighty-year-old Francis welcomed the assembled crowd in the poor San Francisco neighborhood on the last day of his visit to Colombia when his vehicle pulled up brakes to prevent a man from standing in its way.

On Sunday, though, he also acknowledged that countries have to manage migrant flows and make sure new migrants can be integrated into society.

Responding to a question about the negative effects of the suspension of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in the United States, Pope Francis said that since the president presents himself as pro-life, then he should also be pro-family and not do anything that would be detrimental to the family. The implication was that the biblical mandate to "welcome the stranger" necessarily entails DACA and that no other position was possible.

Trump announced September 5 that he was phasing out the program; his decision was strongly criticized by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Asked about this very issue Monday, the Pope's answer was more circumspect.

The program was announced in 2012 by President Obama and implemented by the Department of Homeland Security, in the memorandum "Exercising Prosecutorial Discretion With Respect to Individuals Who Came to the United States as Children".

"I heard about the abolition of this law, but I could not read the articles, how and why this decision was made".

The pontiff said all people must confront the situation.

"Young people today need to re-find their roots", the pontiff said. If the U.S. President is pro-life as he says he is, the Pope added, "he understands the importance of family and life, and that family unity should be defended".
