  • Massive Earthquake Rocks Mexico as the Country Prepares for Hurricane Katia on Gulf Coast

At least 65 people were killed in a historically massive natural disaster that struck the southern coast of Mexico Thursday night, leaving cities and towns in rubble as relief supplies and cleanup crews arrive to assist devastated residents, officials confirmed on Saturday. Tens of thousands of emergency packs, as well as 100 extra police officers and rescue dogs were sent to Juchitán, in Oaxaca, said to be the worst affected town.

As residents attempted to dig themselves out, Hurricane Katia hit the Gulf coast state of Veracruz late Friday, triggering a mudslide that killed two people.

The quake was strong enough to cause buildings to sway violently in the capital city.

Hardest hit was Juchitan, a Oaxaca state city where 36 people died when the magnitude 8.1 quake toppled buildings.

The sharp increase came as civil defence authorities in the state of Oaxaca said that 71 deaths had been confirmed in that state alone.

At least 15 people also died in the neighboring state of Chiapas, while another four deaths were also confirmed in the state of Tabasco to the north, according to local authorities.

"The situation is Juchitan is critical, this is the most awful moment in its history", mayor Gloria Sanchez said.

Waves rose as high as 0.7 metres in Mexico, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said, though that threat passed.

The quake had a depth of 20 miles, according to CNN.

The magnitude 8.1 quake that hit Mexico overnight occurred within a seismic hotspot in the Pacific where one tectonic plate dives under another.

President Buhari said that Nigerians sympathised with Mexico and are praying for the repose of the souls of the departed and the quick recovery of the injured.

Ignacio Chavez said his son died in the quake.

The odd lights people saw and documented on social media are believed to be part of an unusual phenomenon, which is caused by the activation of electrical charges on certain types of rock during a quake.

The epicenter of the quake hit on Thursday night in the southern state of Chiapas, one of Mexico's poorest regions.

In September 1985, a magnitude 8.0 quake killed an estimated 9,500 people in and around Mexico City.
