South Korea, Russia to develop projects involving North Korea

  • North Korea readying for ballistic missile tests?

North Korea says it needs to defend itself against what it sees as United States aggression. "In 2013, former US Deputy Secretary of State Steven Ganyard said that "(there) is nobody at the Central Intelligence Agency who can tell you more personally about Kim Jong Un than Dennis Rodman and that in itself is scary".

Instead, the U.S. must now focus on diplomatic means to prevent North Korea from completing the development of a deliverable miniaturized nuclear warhead on an ICBM, which would put the USA and its allies at an unacceptable risk.

Despite US pressure, China is still unwilling to force North Korea to abandon its nuclear program. North Korea now believes that its nuclear arsenal is its best deterrent against an American invasion, and hence will not give it up no matter how much the United States tries to push them. Even the South Korean government has said that dialogue may have to wait, since North Korea's latest nuclear test and rapid-fire missile launches threaten to destabilize the security balance in East Asia.

Unfortunately, since taking office, President Donald Trump and his administration have failed to competently execute their own stated policy of "maximum pressure and engagement" with North Korea.

"A military conflict on the peninsula would have disastrous consequences for the Koreans and the entire region", said Zhebin, director of the Center for Korean Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences, adding that South Korea - with its 25 nuclear reactors - was especially vulnerable. And if the Treasury Department wants to cut off Chinese companies doing business with the North, it would be wise to target a high-profile firm clearly violating sanctions that China itself has approved.

The Philippines is North Korea's fifth-largest trade partner. The abysmal state of South Korea-China relations are making strategic cooperation between the two countries impossible at the very time when such cooperation is necessary because of North Korea's continuing nuclear weapons and missile provocation. He doesn't want to see what's happening there, either.

"Regarding the North's nuclear test and missile launches, the leaders of the two countries noted it was time to increase pressure on the North rather than engage the country in dialogue under the current conditions where the worldwide community's condemnation and pressure against the North continue to intensify", the chief press secretary of the Korean President, Yoon Young-chan said in Vladivostok, according to Yonhap.

Since Trump's political crisis in the US is forcing him to consolidate his supporters on the far right, he is threatening to withdraw from the South Korea-US Free Trade Agreement. Even if the USA managed to wipe out everything, Seoul would still be vulnerable to attacks from North Korea's artillery.

In addition to restricting the North's access to crude oil, refined petroleum and natural gas liquids, the draft document obtained by the Nikkei Asian Review also includes a ban on textile exports.

"Hopefully we're not going to have to use it on North Korea", he said during a joint press conference at the White House with Kuwaiti Emir Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah.

The basketball great has been to North Korea several times following his first visit in 2013.

A prolonged halt in oil supplies could eventually bring the North Korean economy to its knees.

"Our commitment among the allies are ironclad", Mattis said. But Wang is not the only brilliant strategist in Chinese diplomacy: there is also State Councilor Yang Jiechi and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is renowned for his dramatic diplomatic flourishes on the global stage.
