  • Harvey and Irma, Married 75 Years, Marvel at the Storms Bearing Their Names

Irma and Harvey have weathered 75 years together, and Americans can weather the two storms that bear their names.so long as we remember the power of love, the power of giving, and the human decency that makes this one elderly couple a pair we're not likely to forget anytime soon.

But while Harvey dumped torrential rains on Houston and Irma almost leveled some Caribbean islands, the Schluters, who have been married for 75 years, have only ever spread love.

Harvey and Irma are also in Spokane, but they've got nothing to do with bad weather.

Given the severity of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, experts expect that the names will thus be put to bed. The organization has alternated between male and female names since 1979, and they routinely reuse names for minor storms-but if a storm is historically costly and deadly, the name will be retired.

"I don't know anything much about hurricanes, we don't have them here in Spokane, but they look terrible, terrible", she says.

The couple celebrated their 75th anniversary in March at a local church in Spokane.

"I have no idea what I'd do; I've never been in that kind of a situation", she said. Harvey is 104. Irma is 93. When asked why the couple took in so many children, Irma said, "I don't know, we just did".

The Schluters live nowhere near hurricane country; they're from Washington state. Irma, 92, said when her children told her about the names of the hurricanes, she thought they were joking.

Harvey has seen this hurricane thing before. But when storms are devastating and memorable, they retire their names. "They were interesting little people". Surely both hurricanes meet the requirement for their names not to be used again. "I'd try and help some people, I don't know how".
