Nadal is again healthy and capable of excellence, after wrist and knee injuries dulled his effectiveness in 2015 and 2016 - the first seasons since 2004 in which he not only failed to win a Grand Slam trophy but didn't even make a final.

South Africa's Kevin Anderson overcame a stiff resistance from Spain's P Carrero Busta in the men's singles semis to advance to his maiden grand slam final.

The 28th-seeded Anderson leads 17th-seeded Sam Querrey 7-6 (5), 6-7 (9), 6-3 as their U.S. Open quarterfinal heads to the fourth set.

He became the top-ranked male South African player on 10 March 2008 after making the final at the 2008 Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas.

Anderson, No.32 in the world, will be the lowest-ranked man to play for the title at Flushing Meadows since the ATP rankings began in 1973 and the first South African since Cliff Drysdale in 52 years.

The 6ft 8in Anderson needed some inspiration and he found it in the second set with a backhand cross-court victor that brought him level at one set all. With Carreno Busta serving at 5-6, 30-30, he hit a double fault which gave the South African a set point.

Sevastova, who matched her best major run from past year at NY by ousting Maria Sharapova to reach the last eight, led 3-1 in the third set before Stephens rallied.

"He was playing all the time to my backhand, and when you don't have that confidence to play three, four hours with a good backhand against Rafa, it's just a matter of time, " del Potro said. "I just wanted to go to the best tennis program, and I was able to make a great decision". "Still obviously a very hard match ahead of me, but I think right now I'm just trying to unwind a little bit and just enjoy sort of today's match".

"But then he start to play more aggressive, to serve really good, and to return my serve all the time and when I dipped a little bit, he made me break". It was an unbelievably tough match for me.

Despite the loss, Carreno Busta was pleased with his best ever grand slam finish. It was some intense practices, but I've definitely gotten much more comfortable with it, and I can certainly see the benefits. "I feel like I'm going to have another opportunity to go one step further", said the Florida-based Johannesburg native. I had worked very hard. "When I wasn't playing, like, of course I loved my time off, but when I got back to playing tennis, it was, like, this is where I want to be".

"I don't know if it's appropriate, " Anderson said. Nadal leads their head-to-head series 8-5, but del Potro won their most recent matchup, on a hard court at the Rio Olympics past year. "I was told I probably needed surgery on my hip", Anderson said.
