  • Trump confronts accelerating Russia probes

Trump Jr. took the meeting with Russian government officials after being contacted by Rob Goldstone, a publicist for the Kremlin-linked Agalarov family that has worked with Trump for years.

Senator Chris Coons (D-Del), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, sent out a statute on giving false statements to Congress after Donald Trump, Jr. spoke with Senate staff Thursday.

"We look forward to a professional and productive meeting and appreciate the opportunity to assist the committee", Alan Futerfas, a lawyer for Trump Jr., said in a statement.

The younger Trump, who now helps run President Donald Trump's vast business empire, has emerged as a key figure in numerous Washington probes, with several being conducted by congressional committees along with a criminal investigation headed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, a former head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

July 9, 2017: The next day, another report from the Times stated Trump Jr. knew the meeting was about possibly gaining information that could harm Clinton.

President Donald Trump's eldest son has left Capitol Hill after speaking with Senate investigators for about five hours.

President Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort also attended the meeting at Trump Tower.

The New York Times first reported on the statement.

Committee staff members met last month with Glenn Simpson, the co-founder of the strategic research firm that commissioned the unsubstantiated dossier that claims Trump conspired with Russian Federation to win the election.

"This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russian Federation and its government's support for Mr. Trump", music publicist Rob Goldstone wrote to Trump Jr.

A lawyer for the Agalarovs has denied that developer Aras Agalarov ever claimed to have damaging information about Clinton, as Goldstone had written to Trump Jr.

Grassley's panel is investigating a number of issues linked to the Russian interference campaign, including "attempts to influence USA elections" and whether there have been any violations of foreign lobbying laws.

"As much as some have made of my using the phrase 'I love it, ' it was simply a colloquial way of saying that I appreciated Rob's gesture", he said in his statement on Thursday. Schiff says the House committee also expects to interview him.

Earlier in the summer, news broke that Trump Jr. and members of the Trump campaign met with Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian lawyer with government connections, in an effort to receive compromising information on then-campaign rival Hillary Clinton.

Manafort met privately with staff on that committee in July.

"If you just take the number of new stories that have appeared in the public press that have to be validated or debunked that just have arisen" during the August recess, "that in itself is months of work", the Democratic senator said.
