Charles Manson's teen killer granted parole again

  • The youngest member of Charles Manson's murderous family went before a parole panel for the 21st time... and took a big step toward being released

"I don't find parts in any of this that makes me feel the slightest bit good about myself", she said in her hearing, as reported by TIME.

Brown has 120 days to approve, reject or do nothing with the board's decision. "He may uphold, reverse, or modify the decision", a state official said. She was not directly involved in the murders of actor Sharon Tate and four others the previous night.

She said her sister and the others killed deserve better.

A troubled teen, Van Houten was using LSD and marijuana and had become pregnant by the age of 17. She is convicted of stabbing Leno and Rosemary LaBianca to death in 1969. Almost five decades ago, she said she held Rosemary down with a pillowcase over her head as others stabbed her dozens of times.

After Manson and his group committed the sick killings - they used the victims' blood to write "Rise", "Death to Pigs" and "Healter-Skelter", a misspelled reference to a Beatles song, on the walls and a refrigerator door.

Nearly 50 years after committing the murders which resulted in a life sentence, Leslie Van Houten, is up for parole.

Manson, 82 - who suffered a health scare earlier this year - remains confined in Corcoran State Prison.

Van Houten was both the youngest and also seemingly the most unlikely member of Manson's so-called family.

This is not the first time that Van Houten's parole is hanging by a thread.

Van Houten, who was 19 when she killed for Manson during a series of murders that terrorized Los Angeles over the summer of 1969, appeared before a parole panel for the 21st time.

A two-member California review board had granted parole to Van Houten in April.

But Brown overruled that decision, finding that Van Houten had yet to fully account for her willingness to participate in the murders and remained a danger to society. She was stabbed 16 times by cult members. Brown rejected release a year ago.

"Their intentions were to start a race war". She has spent the past 46 years behind bars.

Rich Pfeiffer, an attorney for Van Houten, told The Associated Press that his client was relieved by Wednesday's ruling, adding he believes she will be released eventually.

Yet in the same parole hearing, she also suggested she has trouble remembering everything she did.
