A very visibly nervous Prince George made his school debut at London's Thomas Battersea on Thursday.

Prince George's first day at school "went well", the Duke of Cambridge has revealed.

The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, who is now pregnant with her third child originally planned that she would be the one to take her son to school however she was dealing with severe morning sickness so couldn't make it.

But in fact, Prince William and Kate Middleton are set to pick Prince George up from school every day unless their work schedules permit them from doing so, with the news coming as little surprise after Kate told fellow parents "I may see you at the school gates" back in April.

The school is said to be teaching George, who will be going by the name George Cambridge, how to be kind, gain confidence, leadership and humility, The Guardian reported.

According to The Mirror, Thomas' Battersea is a reputed preparatory school in south London, and charges quite a hefty fee of GBP 17,604 (Rs 14,75,620) per year.

The tot was later pictured meeting the head of the lower school as he arrived for his first day, melting hearts across the nation as he bravely shook her hand. George's parents have said they want him to have as normal a childhood as possible, and palace officials tried to discourage news organizations from sending photographers to the school Thursday, instead offering pool photos of George's arrival.

Local media reported that during the school time Prince George will put on his uniform includes navy shorts and jacket, long red socks and black shoes.

Along with his classmates, George spent his first day getting to know teachers, adults and other children as well as completing the important task of finding his classroom peg.

The young royal will be known at school as George Cambridge.

Then, with William holding one hand and Ms Haslem the other, he walked inside.

However, he wasn't the only royal entering reception with Maud Windsor joining her distant cousin at Thomas's School in Battersea.

After a year and a half in a facility Montessori in Norfolk, the prince 4 year old discovers a new environment in this co-educational school for 18 000 pounds a year (about 20 000 euros) of the london neighbourhood of Battersea, whose philosophy is in three words: "Fun, learning, and achievement". And fortunately for Kate, there will be plenty more school runs to do - and, of course, plenty more first days of school.
