  • UN claims Syrian forces responsible for Khan Sheikhoun chemical attack

The UN is accusing the Syrian government in using chemical weapons earlier in April in the country's Idlib province the Washington Post reported.

Syrian forces were responsible for the deadly chemical weapons attack in April which killed at least 80 civilians, United Nations war crimes investigators said on Wednesday.

The U.N. report, the commission's 14th since 2011, said the perpetrators behind the remaining six attacks have not yet been identified.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, has previously given a death toll of at least 87.

Russia's Defense Ministry said the toxic agents were released when a Syrian airstrike hit a rebel chemical weapons arsenal and munitions factory.

"The parties to this horrific conflict must fundamentally realign their tactics with basic notions of humanity, and the global community must reinvigorate its commitment to meaningful justice and accountability for all perpetrators of crimes, if we are to see a significant shift away from Machiavellian disregard for the interests of the Syrian people and the progress towards alleviating the suffering of civilians", said Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, Chair of the Commission.

August 21, 2013: Hundreds of people are killed in the east and southwest of Damascus, including in Moadamiyet al-Sham, in chemical weapons strikes after Syrian troops launch an offensive in the area.

The report also claimed that a medical facility in the town was targeted by Syrian or Russian planes armed with rockets four and half hours after the gas attack, as civilians wounded in the incident sought medical treatment. But that conclusion, reached by a fact-finding mission of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), but stopped short of saying who was responsible. The report identified them as Soviet-made S-5M rockets, used by the Syrian air force.

Human Rights Watch blames Syrian government forces for attacks there.

That attack led U.S. President Donald Trump to launch the first U.S. air strikes on a Syrian air base.

This includes the use of sarin gas in Khan Sheikhoun, Syria in April that killed at least 83 people.

The report also criticised the United States for a failure to carry out sufficient checks before launching an attack on a mosque in Al Jinah, Aleppo, targeting an alleged meeting of senior Al Qaeda leaders. His apologists can try to wiggle away from Obama's culpability, but the fact of the matter is that Obama made the decision not to take out Syria's chemical weapons supply and then made a ridiculous deal with Syria's ally Russian Federation to have the stockpile removed.
