New York Jets sign former TCU WR Jeremy Kerley

  • Santa Clara California U.S.- San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jeremy Kerley eludes Dallas Cowboys and runs in for a touchdown in the first quarter during a game at Levi's Stadium on Sunday

Things must have gone well, because the Jets have signed Kerley to a one-year deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Kerley started 13 games for the 49ers in 2016 and led the team with both 667 receiving yards and 64 receptions (three touchdowns). Kerley spent five years with the Jets after the team took him in the fifth round of the 2011 Draft. He returned to the club in the spring on a new three-year, $10.5-million contract.

In five seasons with the Jets (2011-15), Kerley played in 74 games (24 starts) and recorded 182 receptions for 2,225 yards and nine touchdowns.

But new coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch chose to go a different direction when assembling the regular season roster before Sunday's opener against Carolina.

Taylor will likely fill in for Kerley as a slot receiver and return man, while Bolden may handle return duties as well. He's averaged 9.1 yards per punt return on 155 attempts including one touchdown.

Kerley is coming off a career-best 66-catch season with San Francisco. By his final season in NY in 2015, Kerley's role in the offense had diminished, and the Hutto, Texas native caught a single-season career-low 16 passes for 152 yards and two scores. Over the weekend they traded DL Sheldon Richardson in exchange for WR Jermaine Kearse.
