Almost a year later, Bafana Bafana have been informed that their win won't count, and the match will have to be replayed.

The decision came after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the life ban for the Ghanaian referee.

He awarded a penalty to South Africa in their 2-1 win in November a year ago for handball but replays showed the ball hit Senegal's Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly on the knee.

Federation Internationale de Football Association did not give further details but African soccer's governing body (CAF) said at the time that Lamptey had wrongly awarded a penalty to the South Africans and suspended him for three months.

South Africa converted the spot kick before going on to win the game, their only victory so far in the final phase of the World Cup African zone qualifiers. In the 41st minute of the match, Lamptey gifts South Africa a spot kick by whistling for handball on Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly, whose hand was clearly nowhere near the ball.

The November 2016 result is the only win collected by bottom side South Africa in Group D of African qualifying, with Senegal above them in third place, a point behind joint-leaders Burkina Faso and Cape Verde after September's fixtures.

"According to Fifa, this decision follows the confirmation of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to uphold the lifetime ban of match referee, Joseph Lamptey, for match manipulation, the ruling imposed by the Fifa Disciplinary and Appeal Committees".

"The match will be replayed within the November 2017 worldwide window, with the exact date to be confirmed in due course".
