Jaguar unveils AI-based self-driving steering wheel

  • Jaguar’s AI steering wheel is a gateway to self-driving rideshares

The steering wheel concept lives in your home and becomes your trusted companion. And British automaker Jaguar Land Rover hopes it's able to keep some hands on steering wheels.

In theory, one could tell the steering wheel that they have a meeting at 8 am and the wheel can then organize for a vehicle to arrive at the designated place at the right time. The AI-based steering wheel dubbed Sayer would not be used to steer the vehicle; rather it would serve as a system capable of hooking up with the autonomous/self-driving auto a person is travelling in. Created as part of the upcoming Future-Type concept from Jaguar Land Rover, Sayer is a removable steering wheel designed to travel with owners as they jump between cars.

When on your desktop at home or in your handbag, you'll be able to hail a ride or reserve the Jaguar of your choosing from the on-demand membership club that most manufacturers are now developing.

The wheel will apparently be a significant feature on an upcoming Jaguar concept auto called Future-Type but whether or not it'll ever actually go into production is another matter.

Part of Jagaur's release on the wheel sheds more information on how it'll be used: "Simply ask Sayer from the comfort of your living room and it will work out when you get up, when a auto needs to autonomously arrive at your door and even advise which parts of the journey you might enjoy driving yourself".

Capable of carrying out hundreds of tasks, Jaguar says Sayer isn't your typical tiller.

Right now, the only reason you're likely to remove your steering wheel from your vehicle and carry it around with you is grievous error, but in the self-driving future it could be a very different story. The wheel could be used as a virtual personal assistant, planning a journey and a person's routine in advance. We suppose the legal and safety implications of that future is still up for debate, but in the meantime the folks at Jaguar Land Rover are thinking that maybe the steering wheel could still be kept, but it could be improved upon greatly.
