  • Tropical Storm Jose looms right behind Hurricane Irma

As of Monday, the National Hurricane Center is predicting that the storm will reach the edge of the Caribbean on Wednesday. But while Hurricane Harvey has been a devastating storm that made landfall in Texas last week and will have relief providers working to restore the area for years to come, we still need to be aware of what could happen during the rest of hurricane season.

At 11 a.m on Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center announced that Tropical Storm Jose has formed in the Atlantic ocean right behind Hurricane Irma.

Meteorologist Chris Justus said predicting the storm will be somewhat easier and more accurate starting Monday because hurricane hunter planes will be flying into the storm twice daily to collect data.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts and some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours. Though Irma's path is uncertain, forecasters say there is an "increasing chance" the storm will impact Florida.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 160 miles.

Jose will likely become a hurricane by later in the week.

Irma is deservedly getting all the attention at the moment, but there are two other systems to watch in the tropical Atlantic.

Looking at the September 3 ensemble tracks from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, the southeastern barely visible under the mass of potential tracks, showing just how hard it is for computer modeling to predict the path of a storm that is still several days away from any potential USA landfall.

The hurricane center said Tuesday Jose could become a hurricane by Friday.

Elsewhere, it is too early to determine what direct impacts Irma may have on the continental United States, including the SC coastline.

Given the above average predictions for this year, now might be a good time to make plans for evacuation or stock up on supplies in case a hurricane could travel your way over the next few months.
