Huge black hole discovered near heart of Milky Way

"The origins of such "supermassive" black holes (SMBHs) remain unknown, although those of stellar-mass black holes are well understood. Thus we are increasing the number of them by the new technique".

One theory is that smaller black holes steadily coalesce into larger ones and these come together to form supermassive black holes at the hearts of galaxies, but until now, no definitive evidence for intermediate mass black holes has been found.

It is too hard to see the black holes as they do not emit their light. The finding was also supported by further simulations of the gas movements.

The intermediate-mass black holes are somewhere between the two in size and far less common. The black hole consists of some of the most densely packed globular clusters in the entire galaxy. "We think some of those black holes are the seeds from which the much larger supermassive black holes grow to at least a million times more massive". "We know very little about how black holes form".

But such black holes had not previously been reliably detected and their existence has been fiercely debated among the astronomical community. An absolutely big black hole 100,000 times more massive than the sun has been discovered in a toxic gas cloud near the heart of the Milky Way.

The presence of the mid-sized black hole so close to Sagittarius A* - a mere 200 light years away - could provide valuable fuel to the theory that smaller black holes drift towards the centre of the galaxy, coalescing into bigger black holes until they join the supermassive centre point.

Instead, researchers look to possible influences on nearby objects or disruptions in gravitation to detect these occurrences and, based upon observations of the cloud of molecular gas, scientists believe the most likely cause of these particular gravitational disruptions could be the existence of a black hole.

Prof Oka said it suggests 'this massive object is an inactive IMBH which is not now accreting matter'.

Despite their popularity both in real science and science fiction the concept of a black hole has only been around for a hundred years - as predicted by Albert Einstein. "It's the most promising evidence so far" for an intermediate mass black hole, says astronomer Kevin Schawinski of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. While it is just been hypothesized and not officially declared as identified. That growth should happen in part by mergers with other black holes and in part by accretion of material from the part of the galaxy that surrounds the black hole.

They conclude their paper by saying that such a discovery would make a considerable contribution to the progress of modern physics.
