Mini electric vehicle design revealed by BMW

  • Mini Electric Concept previews 2019 production car

The new concept-a bit of a throwback from previous electric concepts-previews Mini's first expected electric production auto, due out in 2019.

After some discussions, BMW selected Mini's plant in Oxford, England, to build the new EV.

The rear lights are also different, sporting Union Flag styling within them to give them an ultra-British look - paying tribute to the original Austin Mini.

However, given recent advances in EV tech - the Chevrolet Bolt can do 285 km on a charge, for example - we expect MINI's first EV will be capable of covering more than 300 km at a go.

Mini say that the vehicle shows what daily driven mobility will look like in the years to come.

Finally, the rear of the concept vehicle has no need for exhaust pipes - so there are none.

Mini's new Electric Concept will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. "That's how we at MINI envisage electric mobility in tomorrow's world", says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for MINI, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad.

BMW in 2008 launched the Mini E, a "demonstration" vehicle developed for field trials and research. Over 600 MINI E cars entered service worldwide for the goal of the field studies. About 450 of these EVs came to the U.S. as part of a test by parent company BMW to see how its customers might adapt to alternative powertrains, data that led to the BMW i program. The most eye-catching feature however is the 19-inch wheels with black 3D-printed aerodynamic inlays. "MINI E" badges are also integrated into the radiator grille and exterior mirror caps.

We doubt Mini will make the same mistake a decade later.

Mini is holding its cards to its chest in relation to powertrain details, except to say the single-motor, pure battery-electric set up will be "very powerful" and promises "exciting driving dynamics" on urban and rural roads with a "maximised range".

With a smooth and fluid design, the team behind the MINI EV wants to usher in the best aerodynamic efficiency and they have even pushed the door handles on the inside so it doesn't stick out.
