Apple to remove home button in upcoming high-end iPhone, report says

  • Apple may launch iPhone 8 on this date

According to the most recent leak reported by WCCFTECH, the newest leak on Apple's iPhone 8 has something to do with the motherboard. Sources indicate that a thin, software bar will appear across the bottom of the screen in lieu of the home button, which users can drag up to the middle of the screen to open the phone.

According to the Wall Street Journal, sources claimed that Apple has scheduled a product announcement event on September 12 that will include the expected three new iPhone models: the iPhone 7s, the iPhone 7s Plus, and the iPhone 8. Some sources are predicting that, in-line with Apple's usual MO of getting new devices on sale within a couple of weeks, the iPhone 8 may be around for purchase by September 22, with pre-orders in the run-up to that date. "With the iPhone being Apple's flagship product this could be a defining moment for the company".

Ltd. analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said this facial recognition technology could replace Touch ID entirely on the new iPhone. Last year's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were announced on September 7 at an event in San Francisco, and preorders began at 3:01 a.m. ET on September 9 in the U.S. That means having a way to slide the display halfway down-currently achieved by double-tapping the home button-is more important than ever.

The device will also feature wireless charging, as Apple finally catches up to Android. The power button on the right side is physically longer to make it easier to press. From here, users can continue to flick upwards to close the app and go back to the home screen. In addition to being faster, these new processors are also more energy efficient, which should help cut down battery consumption when performing regular tasks.

I don't really dwell too much on iPhone rumours, but this one is an exception because one, it's about a major change to the core user interaction model of iOS and the iPhone, and two, I happen to know this rumour happens to be accurate. Revenue in the company's Services unit-which includes AppleCare, Apple Pay, and Apple Music-reached $7.3 billion, a quarterly record and up 22% from the year-ago quarter.

I don't think the concept of a premium iPhone will be a one-off - I expect Apple to release relatively high-priced iPhone models each year with features that are too costly, or that simply can not yet be manufactured in high volumes, for the mainstream iPhone models at mainstream price points. The new iPhone is reportedly going to rely more on gesture controls.
