Kushner in Middle East to Try to Jumpstart Stalled Peace Process

  • Meeting of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with Jared Kushner in Tel Aviv

"During the audience", Spa said, "the two sides confirmed commitment to reinforce bilateral relations and close co-operation, in addition to [enhancing] common interests in realising genuine and lasting peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis".

Kushner, also the son-in-law of President Donald Trump, traveled to the Middle East Sunday with White House deputy national security adviser Dina Powell and Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt, a White House official said Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the USA delegation is expected to arrive in Israel, the media outlet said citing a White House aide.

The three are also expected to meet leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan and Egypt during their trip to the region. On Thursday, they are set to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The White House released little information about the trip when it got announced 10 days ago.

"I have met with Trump envoys about 20 times since the beginning of his term as president of the United States", Abbas said in a meeting with the left-wing Meretz Party in Israel, according to a report in Haaretz.

Previous U.S. governments have committed to an independent Palestinian state, but in February Trump broke with longstanding U.S. policy by saying he would be happy with either a one-state or two-state solution if the parties were happy.

"We hope they bring clear answers this time", he added.

Abbas expressed frustration with the U.S. on Sunday, saying he has met with the American representatives 20 times since Trump took office in January but still had no clear vision of what type of peace plan they had in mind. I have pleaded with them to say the same thing to Netanyahu, but they refrained.

Abbas is reportedly working to hold a meeting of the Palestinian National Council, which is the highest legislative body of the PLO and elects the PLO leadership.

"I don't even know how they are dealing with us, because his entire administration is in chaos", Abbas told a delegation of dovish Israeli lawmakers visiting Ramallah.

Netanyahu's hand has been weakened by an ongoing corruption probe.
