The majority of those surveyed (56 percent) disapproved of US President Donald Trump's response to the Charlottesville incident, while 28 percent commended his remarks, the poll showed.

A 2-to-1 majority of Americans disapprove of President Trump's blame-both-sides response to the lethal white supremacist march in Charlottesville, Virginia, earlier this month, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll.

As noted, 9 percent overall call it acceptable to hold neo-Nazi or white supremacist views, while 83 percent call this unacceptable, leaving 8 percent with no opinion.

Respondents to the poll were also asked about the "alt-right", a loosely defined group that counts among its ranks white supremacists and anti-Semites, with 10% saying they supported the group, while 50% said they oppose it and 41% said they have no opinion.

The respondents also weighed in on whether they approved of U.S. President Donald Trump's heavily criticized response to the Charlottesville protests led by white supremacists. Disapproval of his response spikes to 66 percent in this group, and 53 percent say he's been equating neo-Nazis and white supremacists with their opponents.

-Men are much more likely than women to back Trump: 44 percent of men approve of the job he is doing, just 28 percent of women. There was a stark difference along party lines, as 84% of Democrats said they disapproved and just 19% of Republicans said the same.

There's far more agreement on whether it's acceptable or unacceptable to hold neo-Nazi or white supremacist views.

Strength of sentiment is similarly negative for Trump on Charlottesville and, notably, his lower approval rating for handling this issue occurs in his base.

Almost 60 percent of Americans disapprove of the job Trump has done since taking office, and a strong gender gap persists among those who find Trump's job performance favorable. Thirty-seven percent of Americans approve of the job Trump is doing, 58 percent disapprove.

The poll - which surveyed 1,014 adults by phone - was conducted August 16 to August 20 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. Results have a margin of sampling error of 3.5 points, including the design effect.
